Maya Sojourns
Operating principles and community standards. How Maya Sojourns behaves toward the people it works with, the guests it serves, and the communities its work touches.
Maya Sojourns operates on the principle that being welcomed into someone's home, workshop or world is a privilege, not a commodity. Every relationship with a host is built on trust, over time, through genuine engagement on their own terms. The brand does not claim ownership of or authority over the crafts, music or cultures it introduces guests to.
Maya Sojourns compensates every host, craftsperson and musician generously and fairly, above market rates for their time and above any arrangement they would receive through conventional tourism channels. It does not negotiate the compensation of practitioners. It does not use a practitioner's participation in one sojourn as leverage in negotiations with others. It does not publish the names of practitioners without their explicit consent.
The quiet patronage programme, contributions to cultural preservation, documentation, and education programmes connected to the crafts, music and places Maya Sojourns works with, is an operating commitment rather than a marketing claim. Details appear in The Ledger each year.
Maya Sojourns is honest about what is possible and what is not. If something cannot be arranged as promised, guests are informed immediately and offered a reschedule or a full refund. No guest has ever been misled about what they were paying for or what they would receive. Pricing is communicated privately and completely, with no hidden fees.
The communities Maya Sojourns introduces guests to are not a backdrop for a luxury experience. They are the point. The brand does not bring guests into communities in ways that create disruption, voyeurism, or the spectacle of poverty as exoticism. Access is arranged in ways the community itself has agreed to, and that benefit the hosts and their families rather than burden them.
The Custodian is personally accountable for every sojourn. Complaints are addressed directly, by the Custodian, within 48 hours. If a complaint reflects a genuine failure of the brand's operating principles, it is acknowledged, investigated, and where possible remedied. The Custodian's contact is available through the Introduction process.
