Ethiopia, where churches were carved down into the living rock and chant is sung in a language kept for the liturgy alone. A faith held unbroken since the fourth century.
Ethiopia has kept its Christianity unbroken since the fourth century, in a form found nowhere else on earth. Its churches were not built upward but carved downward, hewn whole from the rock. Its chant is sung in Ge'ez, an ancient tongue alive now only in worship. Pilgrimage here is not a memory. It is this week's road.
These sites are lived in, not displayed. Some are reached only by a climb. Some keep thresholds that have never opened to a visitor.
We hold what we are building here as pilgrimage rather than sightseeing, and we ready it slowly, with the respect that asks for.

The churches were not raised from the ground. They were cut down into it, stone by patient stone.
