The Mediterranean

Italy, where monastic life has kept prayer and labour in one motion for fifteen centuries. Vines tended as devotion, bread made as a rule, manuscripts copied long after print.

The Mediterranean has kept its contemplative life in working order for fifteen hundred years. Behind monastery walls, prayer and labour were never pulled apart. A vineyard is tended as devotion. Bread and cheese are made to a rule of life. Manuscripts are copied by hand long after the printing press arrived.

Guests are received here in the oldest sense, exactly as the tradition asks. The day belongs to the hours of the office, and the work is what fills the spaces between them.

We begin in Italy. Greece and Andalusia will follow when their communities are ready.

Greece and Andalusia are in preparation, and will appear here in their own time.

The day is shaped by the hours of prayer. The work is simply what happens in between.

If the contemplative life draws you, a conversation can begin here.
