From Anatolia to the Atlas, this is a world that gave its faith a body. A whirling ceremony that empties the self. A reed flute whose breath is the whole point. A wall of zellij assembled piece by piece, each shape struck by hand against a blade.
The masters here trained for ten years or more before anyone let them teach. Their welcome comes through lodges and old guilds, on terms that were set long before us.
We are readying Turkey and Morocco together, learning what each tradition asks of a guest.
The turning looks like dance. It is closer to a prayer that has forgotten the one who prays.
