Cloth as cosmology

In the Quechua valleys, a length of cloth is a way of writing the world. The patterns set on a backstrap loom carry mountains, water, and the movement of the stars. Colour comes from cochineal, indigo, and lichen, gathered on walks that double as lessons in the land.

This is patient work, and slower trust. The weaving households open to people who arrive with respect and stay long enough to learn how to look.

The country worth the journey

The Sacred Valley gathers the weaving villages of Chinchero and Ollantaytambo. Cusco, the old Inca capital, sits above it as the gateway. Lake Titicaca keeps island communities with their own textile hands. Beyond the mountains, the forest near the Ucayali holds a separate and careful tradition of its own.
