The Tibetan Buddhist monastic tradition in Ladakh is alive and at work. The monasteries of Hemis, Thiksey, Diskit, Alchi, and others are inhabited by active communities who follow daily liturgical cycles that have not changed in centuries. The monks keep the same chanting sequences, perform the same ritual dances, copy the same manuscripts, and paint the same thangkas as their predecessors have for seven hundred years.
The distinction that matters is this. The monasteries receive tourists every summer, and they endure it, but they do not open for it. The access the Custodian arranges admits you to the working life of the community, not to a performance staged for outsiders.
