Signature journey · India
A kingdom of colour, told by its makers.
The journey
Rajasthan is usually seen through a car window: forts, palaces, the next hotel. We travel it the other way round, from the inside out, with the painters, printers and musicians who give the desert its colour.
Amber and Mehrangarh before the gates open, walked with a historian whose family served the court. The stone is still cool; the city below is just waking.

In Nathdwara, painters grind lapis and gold for pichwais as their families have for three centuries. In Bagru, the Chippa printers lift indigo from the vat. You sit at the bench, not behind a rope.

“He did not explain what he was painting. He painted. After two hours, without a word, he made tea.”
Beyond Jodhpur, the Manganiyar sing ballads no one has written down, in a courtyard lit by lamps. It is not a concert. It ends when the music ends.

The journey slows on the water: a palace on a lake, a boat at dusk, a last dinner where the light turns everything to gold.
