What the brush knows that the painter does not

There is a kind of knowledge that does not live in the mind. The pichwai painters of Nathdwara have a word for it, a word that translates roughly as what-the-body-remembers. The brushes are made from squirrel hair: four to seven hairs, depending on the line required. The painter makes them himself. The knowledge of which hairs, from which part of the tail, produce which quality of line is not written anywhere. It passes through the hand of the master into the hand of the student, over years of practice, until the student stops thinking about it and the knowledge moves to where it belongs: into the wrist, into the fingers, into the particular quality of attention the painter brings to the morning's first stroke.

The veena player's morning

She had performed for three hours the previous evening. The concert ended at eleven. We had been sitting in the family section of the sabha, not the empty tourist rows but the seats the organisers' families have occupied for forty years, and the audience's silence after the main piece lasted long enough to be uncomfortable for people who had not heard this kind of music before. She arrived at the practice room at five-thirty the next morning. She practices for two hours before breakfast. Every day. This is how the music is kept: by doing it, every morning, before anyone is watching.
