The House
Not a founder page. A role page. The Custodian is the figure who holds the relationships, leads every sojourn personally in Phase 1, and is accountable for what is promised.
The Custodian is not a guide. A guide shows you things. The Custodian holds relationships, with the lineage holders, with the places, with the tradition itself, that make genuine access possible. The relationships are the product. The sojourns are their expression.
In Maya Sojourns' operating model, the Custodian is the single point of accountability. Every commitment made to a principal flows from the Custodian's relationships with the lineage holders who will receive them. Every refusal the brand makes, no photography in sacred spaces, no over-promising on access, no group sizes that compromise the encounter, is the Custodian's refusal, made on their behalf in conversations with the tradition. It cannot be outsourced because it cannot be separated from the relationship.
The relationships that make the current sojourns possible were built over more than fifteen years of sustained presence in the traditions they hold. Not as a researcher, not as a journalist, and not as a tourist. As a student, in the dhrupad tradition, in the weaving communities of Rajasthan, in the Carnatic world of Tamil Nadu, with the specific, long-term engagement the traditions require before they open.
The access to the Nathdwara pichwai studios was built through six years of regular visits, learning the iconographic system well enough to discuss the tradition on its own terms. The relationships in the Carnatic world, with the performing families, with the sabha organisers, with the teachers who hold the most inaccessible repertoire, were built through attendance at hundreds of concerts, many years of musicological study, and the accumulation of trust that only time produces. The Ladakhi monastic relationships were built through multiple extended visits and through a network of scholars and practitioners whose introductions were themselves the result of years of prior relationship-building.
These are not shortcuts. There are none. The access exists because the relationships exist, and the relationships exist because the Custodian was present in the traditions long before there was anything to sell.
Before: The Custodian reads every Introduction personally. The proposal that follows is built around the specific principal: their background, their interests, their experience with the tradition or traditions they are entering. It is not adapted from a template. It is specific. The Custodian also communicates with the lineage holders before each sojourn to confirm that the access is appropriate for this particular principal, at this particular moment in the tradition's calendar.
During: In Phase 1, the Custodian is present throughout. They travel with the guest, facilitate the encounters, hold the relationship with the lineage holders in real time, and make the moment-to-moment decisions that determine what is possible and what is not. They are not a host or a companion. They are the relationship itself, made present.
After: The Custodian writes the Ledger entry for each sojourn, a brief, anonymous record of what was accessed, what was given, what was opened. They maintain the ongoing relationship with the guest: the Field Note they send, the introduction they make when a new sojourn is relevant, the quiet awareness that this principal now has a place in the tradition they entered. The sojourn ends. The relationship does not.
In this phase, the Custodian leads every sojourn personally. This is not a limitation. It is the condition that makes the access real. When further Custodians are introduced to the brand, individuals who have built their own relationships with lineages in other traditions and geographies, they will be introduced through the same channel: An Introduction.
