March through May. The heat is still manageable across the plains; the Himalayan passes begin to open. The festival cycle in Rajasthan reaches its peak. Craft traditions tied to the harvest are most active.
June through September. The rain transforms the landscape. Certain textile traditions in Rajasthan accelerate; the dyes run differently, the cloth behaves differently. Not the season for mountain travel. The season for depth in the plains.
October through November. The premier season for the Subcontinent's plains. The heat has lifted. The light is exceptional. The festival cycle opens, Navratri, Diwali, and with it access to musical and ritual traditions that only surface at this time of year.
December through February. The Carnatic music season in Tamil Nadu, kutcheri season, runs from mid-December to mid-January. The finest Carnatic musicians perform daily in Chennai and Kumbakonam. This is why the Cauvery sojourn exists in winter. No other season will do.
